Terminally Ill Woman Finally Allowed to Wed

Cas Willow, 53, from Melbourne, who has just weeks to live because of advancing cancer, has been granted an exemption from the 30-day notice period Australia requires couples to make before they marry, allowing her and her partner of 17 years, Heather Richards, to wed.

Sad though it may be, the couple are very happy to be able to legally officiate their love. Cas, who was in high spirits after the wedding, said: “Just because time is not on our side, it’s just a dream come true. I can’t believe it’s real and it was something I thought I would never see”

“She has always been there for me, she’s been my partner in life, my confidante, my soul mate, my everything,” said her now wife, Heather. “To now be able to carry on afterward and say she was my wife and not just my partner, it adds sort of completion to a relationship.”

Daniel Andrews, the Premier of Victoria, who attended the wedding and stepped in to see that their wedding certificate was presented to them on the same day fittingly commented “this is what equality looks like.”

Everything for their wedding was donated by the community. The couple have asked that wedding gifts are donations to the Peter Mac Cancer Centre.
